T he decision by the Kenya School of Government to continue the sensitization of employees on HIV/AIDS and stigma among its staff members, across all its Campuses, aims to enable the establishment of a corporate culture that prevents and supports persons living with HIV and AIDS in the workplace.
Effective implementation of the HIV and AIDS Policy as well as the prevention strategies will often create greater awareness, prompt people to get tested and seek counseling, provide greater support to persons living With HIV and AIDS and reduces stigma and discrimination. It also guides the establishment of structures to spearhead the prevention of the spread of the disease.
As the Patron of the Aids Control Unit (ACU), I am actively working with my committee team members to effect procedures espoused by the National Aids Control Council (NACC) which are also in line with the Government‘s Performance Contracting (PC) that roots for the MAISHA Certification System.
This system aims to get all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to actively engage in developing and implementing activities to tackle the prevention and management of HIV and AIDS in Kenya. So far, KSG is making progress by organizing fora on a quarterly basis where staff members can be sensitized on HIV/AIDS awareness.
Indeed, there is an upcoming forum scheduled for April 6, 2018 at the School’s Lower Kabete premises on the same. This is contained in the Aids Control Unit committee work plan which has been developed and submitted to NACC, with clear targets for the implementation of HIV/AIDS activities targeting all staff members.
More specifically, staff and family members continue receiving counseling and testing. Another step that will soon be implemented is the distribution of condoms in strategic areas within the School all with an aim to promote prevention of not only HIV, but also Sexually Transmitted Diseases. It is important to understand that HIV and AIDS sensitization activities for the workplace should envisage wide consultations and co-operation with the workers or their representatives to build goodwill. KSG has a qualified and specialized counseling team that is feasible for tackling issues regarding HIV and AIDS.
The MAISHA Certification System that the School is pursuing is expected to have three levels: MAISHA 1, MAISHA 2 and MAISHA 3. Each certificate level will recognize given MDAs successful development and implementation of certain key HIV and AIDS policies and interventions. MDAs will be awarded a certificate after completion of the requirements for each level.
Thanks to NACC’s involvement in offering guidance on expectations to be met, KSG is determined to carry out all expected activities to move to MAISHA 2 and eventually MAISHA 3.KSG Baringo Campus has been tasked to run testing and counseling before the middle of quarter four. On the other hand, other campuses are supposed to continue with sensitizations. We should all contribute to the reduction of HIV/AIDs infection and also steer the School towards MAISHA 2 certification.
